Abstract

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is characterized by chronic intraoral pain that affects approximately one-quarter of postmenopausal women. Its etiology is unknown, and it often evades treatment. This case report of a 61-year-old female with chronic burning mouth syndrome explores the use of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of BMS. Over the course of five acupuncture treatments and continuous Chinese herbal therapy for four months, BMS pain was eliminated. This report suggests that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine may be promising clinical interventions for treating burning mouth syndrome.
